Hey yall! I'm kingofthedregs and I want to share my experience for my first game: Hansel and Gretel's Summoning
I set aside time on my calendar to work on the game and set goals every week leading up the the submission day. As I continued building up my game, I would upload the game to itch.io in the same way the final submissions would be uploaded, and had some playtesters try out my game and provide feedback to an anonymous google form. I would adjust my goals and improve my game using the criticism I received from the playtesters.
If I could go back in time, I would start Unity tutorials the first week of the game jam. I spend the entire first week coming up with ideas, but ended up scrapping them because I didn't know what was reasonably possible for me to accomplish until after I finished the Unity tutorials.
Aside from improving overall quality of the art/music/gameplay, I would:
- add the ability to switch between playing as either Hansel, or Gretel, or as both Hansel and Gretel, each of which would have their own pros and cons
- add more rooms to explore
- add health bar or hearts
- the ability to get hurt from spiders that jump out at you when you search in the wrong spots
- add more endings and lore, possibly more levels
I am experienced in coding and digital art. I have a tiny bit of experience in Roblox Studio and have done tutorials on various animation software and Blender. I had 0 experience with Unity.
